From a Fashion Designer to an Engineer

Since I was in fourth grade, I had a dream. I wanted to be a Fashion Designer, and as time passed that passion grew bigger and bigger inside of me. I wanted to reach that dream so bad and make it a reality, and I was so sure that this is what I’m willing to do when I grow up…
But, somehow once I got to my last year of high school I had to make a choice. It was the toughest decision I had to make in my entire life. I had to choose between doing fashion design in a what I’d call « NOT-THAT-GOOD » Fashion College, and a « REALLY-GOOD » University where I had to study engineering. My parents never interfered in my personal life, instead they were there to back me up no matter what I chose. This made me realize that I had the power to draw my path the way I want. However, at some point I felt scared of doing what I like and regreting it afterwards or maybe ending up jobless. I was confused and helpless.
After a lot of thinking and thinking … and THINKING , I chose the Engineering career. I know this may sound absurde to you because I would’ve reacted the same. I’ve always thougth that one should do the impossible to achieve what he or she dreams of. But, the factor that made me do this was that I wanted my parents to stop worrying about my future. They have worried enough about me and i just want them to sleep in peace at night thinking that I went to a Good university. I mean I don’t know what the future holds for me. All I know is that at that moment that choice felt right.

Well, to cut my story short, right now as I am writing this post, I am studying engineering in Al Akhawayn University. I wouldn’t say I regret my choice because I met some amazing people around here and already made some awesome memories. All I could say is that I still love fashion design and I’ll always do, and as a thing that I learned during my stay in this University is that It’s never too late. So, right now I’m still thinking of pursuing the design career even after graduating. Dreams don’t die and never will. One should only have enough patience and determination to get what he or she wants.

A friend of mine had to make a similar choice: work in a fashion agency in London or study physics in Germany. She tried London for one year and realized that she didn’t like it, and now she is studying physics with me and she loves it!
It’s ok to be afraid, it’s human to be unsure. Don’t worry about the future, as long as you do what you love!
Engineering is a very noble -but difficult- path, don’t give up if you feel like it’s too much for you.
Maybe one day you will be able to combine the two things you love!
